Site of the week - Moneysense - 10 March 2008

Moneysense for schools

www.ulsterbank.ie/moneysense

Financial education for students. Help your students develop the skills they will need to manage their personal finances. Students can also learn how to set up a business, organise finance and build a management team. Site designed by Ulster Bank in partnership with teachers. Suitable for students aged 12 - 18 years.

What is the site about?

It is an online teaching/learning resource which takes students through the basics of banking and financial management – from the decision to open a bank account for the first time through to managing money on a day-to-day basis. The site is divided into sections for students aged 12 - 15 years and 15 - 18 years. A lot of the material is common to both sections. The site map indicates the content and sequence of each section.

When you register your school, you gain access to very useful additional resources - detailed lesson plans, printed work-sheets and suggested homework assignments among others. Registration is very straightforward.

Why was it chosen as site of the week?

It was chosen because:

  • The combination of videos, interactive lessons, quizzes and printable worksheets present the information in a way that will keep students engaged.
  • The skills taught - using an ATM, writing a cheque, lodging money, paying with plastic, internet banking - are basic life skills that every student will need.
  • It includes well-thought out lesson plans for each section, including suggested timings and extension activities for students.
  • The lessons relate to all banks and financial institutions and do not specifically refer to Ulster Bank. The Ulster Bank logo is on-screen during the lessons.

How can it be used as an educational resource?

It has been designed specifically for use in schools. It would be ideal for whole-class teaching using a data projector and/or interactive whiteboard.

The "Bank on It" lessons relate to personal finance, decision making and budgeting. "We're in Business" focuses on setting up and running a business and will be very useful for students planning to run mini-companies.
