What is the site about?
On This Day" is a showcase of some of the most important and interesting stories broadcast by BBC News since 1950. It also has a new World War II feature.
Why was it chosen as site of the week?
It was chosen because
- the site is content - rich and includes captivating video, audio and images
- the front page is updated daily with today’s date and includes a choice of reports from the years 1950-2005 and 1939-45
- aside from the search box you can also search according to themes and eyewitness accounts. See witness accounts of the night the Berlin Wall came down
- all news reports finish with an "In Context" box. This gives a brief rundown on what happened next
- timelines are also a feature of the site
- an RSS feed is available
- relevant links to BBC Radio 4 and BBC History are included
How can it be used as an educational resource?
"On This Day" is an excellent source of primary and secondary source material. It could be used at both primary and post primary level for conducting research studies on World War II or in the following areas:
