Dates and Festivals in September

These links are aimed at both primary and post-primary students. They may be of particular interest to the subjects of CSPE, Religion, History or Geography.Why not plan a class activity around some of the dates?

  All-Ireland Football and Hurling Finals - September 5 & 19
The inter-county Championship runs throughout the summer but the big All-Ireland finals are held each September. It is traditional for the hurling final to be played on the first Sunday of the month with the football final two weeks later.

  Rosh Hashanah - September 8 & 9
Jewish New Year. It starts at sundown on the 8th and is a big day of prayer for Jewish people. Lots of candles will be lit and a common greeting is: 'Leshana Tova Tekatev v'etachetem - May you be inscribed for a sweet and good year!' World Book and Encyclopaedia Britannica have great information on the Jewish religion. This will be a big day in Israel whose population is mostly Jewish. Use Encyclopaedia Britannica to compare Ireland and Israel.
 
  International Literacy Day - September 8
Start a new book and celebrate Literacy Day. Reading is a great way to broaden your knowledge. This day is promoted by UNESCO. Use the Scoilnet search for say 'literacy' and you will get loads of useful resources for class. Try these ICT Literacy Games - designed to help children with their writing skills.
  Cape Clear Island International Storytelling Festival - September 3 - 5
Superb storytelling and music from Cape Clear. This year's storytellers are Rosemary Woods, Charlotte Blake Alston, David Campbell, Pat Speight, Suse Weisse. Ireland has a huge tradition of storytelling - just think of Irish fairy stories and myths. And then of course there is the seanchaí - teller of old stories.
  Ramadan ends -  September 9
This marks the end of the holy month for Muslims (it started on August 11) when everyone over 12 years of age must fast between dawn and dusk. Fasting is one of the Five Pilars of Islam - find out what the others are. World Book and Encyclopaedia Britannica have good material on the religion of Islam
  Roald Dahl Day -  September 13
Events, ideas and online activites are all part of the Roald Dahl Day celebrations.The best place to start is our Primary themepage on Roald Dahl. Have a scrumdiddlyumptious day!
  International day of Democracy - September 15
Find out about the principles of democracy and what is required by a democratic parliament. Democracy, as a system of government is said to have begun in Ancient Greece. CSPE classes might like to try our Democracy Quiz. The World Book and Encyclopaedia Britannica have great content on the concept of democracy.
 

Clean Up the World Weekend - September 17 - 19
A flagship event that encourages its member organisations to organise an activity based on cleaning up their localities and think about ways to involve communities in long-term environmental projects. Read activity reports from previous years for inspiration. Perhaps one way your school can get involved is through the Green Schools initiative.

 

International Day of Peace - September 21
Established by U.N. resolution in 1982, "Peace Day" has grown to include millions of people around the world who participate in all kinds of events, large and small with a view to highlighting efforts to end conflict and promote peace. There are lots of things schools can do - plant a tree (the tree is the symbol of peace), organise class discussions on conflict and peace, or simply light a candle and think about peace..
