Site of the week 5 May 2008 - Body and Mind

BAM!

http://www.bam.gov

Body and Mind - American Department of Health and Human Services website. It provides advice and information about physical and mental health for children aged 9 - 13 years.

What is the site about?

It is divided into six main sections: Food and Nutrition, Physical Activity, Diseases, Your Safety, Your Life and Your Body. Each section includes information, games and activities to help children to learn about the issues involved. The section on Your Life deals with mental health issues including conflict, bullying, choices and consequences, stress and peer pressure in a way that children will understand and find interesting.

Why was it chosen as site of the week?

It was chosen because:

  • It covers a wide range of topics using language and images appropriate to children in its target age range.
  • Navigating through the site is straightforward using top and side menus, while cartoon figures and comic-strip designs make it visually appealing.
  • There is a Teachers Corner which includes lesson plans, handouts and related materials to help teachers integrate the content into classes.
  • Note: It is an American site, using slang in places, so some of the language will seem strange to Irish students.

How can it be used as an educational resource?

It is more suited for individual use by students than for class teaching. Students doing projects on any of the SPHE topics will find information that is useful and relevant. The games section will allow students to consolidate their learning in topics including bullying, peer-pressure, stress, healthy eating and advertising.
