Interactives
Learner.org/Interactives
American site providing educators and students with strategies, content, and activities that can enhance and improve students' skills in a variety of curricular areas. Different interactives are suitable for students of all ages.
What is the site about?
It is a collection of 21 different interactive modules based on English, Maths, Science, Art, History and Geography topics.
Why was it chosen as site of the week?
It was chosen because:
- It will have broad appeal across a range of subjects and age groups.
- The interactives are well-thought out and strike a good balance between providing information and allowing students to explore.
- Each topic has been chosen because it lends itself particularly well to interactive exploration and learning by students.
How can it be used as an educational resource?
All of the interactivities are designed for using online. They may be used with a projector or interactive whiteboard for whole class teaching and are also suitable for independent use by students.
In Exploring 3D Shapes the section Explore and Play with Prisms could be shown to students to demonstrate the relationship between 2D and 3D shapes. Surface Area and Volume of rectangular and cylindrical shapes are also covered in this section.
Sections in Spelling Bee are suitable for ages 6 (grade 1) to ages 18 (grade 12). Students listen to a word, then spell it. For younger children the words are presented in stories, with individual sentences being used for older students. While some words are spelt differently in USA, they seem to be avoided in the lessons.
Elements of a story uses the fairytale Cinderella to investigate setting, characters, plot and other factors that combine to make a story.
For Junior Cert. history students, Collapse, why do Civilisations fail? presents the evidence from Copán and allows students to interpret it and so determine what brought about the downfall of the ancient Maya civilisation. The decision experts agree on is presented at the end of the lesson.
