Providing online literacy and numeracy lessons for young children.
What is the site about?
It provides real learning activities for young children. Lessons include letter recognition and letter building, on upper and lower case letters. The number activities include matching both the number and the name of the number with objects. It provides activities not only in English, but also in Spanish, French and German which means it could be used with children beginning to study those languages.
Why was it chosen as site of the week?
It was chosen because:
It provides an excellent environment for practicing basic pre and early reading skills.
Pages are clear and uncluttered, allowing children to focus on what they are learning.
It provides a range of activities that will motivate children to continue to practice essential basic skills.
It will be very useful in Infant classes, where it can be difficult to find suitable sites to introduce children to using computers for learning.
How can it be used as an educational resource?
In Infant English classes it supports several units in the strand 'Competence and confidence in using language'. The lessons on numbers will suit the 'Number' strand of the Mathematics curriculum.
For First and Second classes, the shape and colour sections will be useful. Children can practice identifying the shapes and learning to recognise and spell shape names, which is part of the 'Shape and space' strand in Mathematics. Similar activities are available for colours.
Foreign languages: While teaching a foreign language is not the main aim of the program, all of the lessons are available through French, Spanish and German. In more senior classes, the option of learning numbers, colours and alphabet sounds in other languages would be the most useful aspect of the program.
It should be noted that the site uses American English. The spelling of 'centre' and 'colour' is American. These words are not part of any of the lessons, but the name of the site is Literacy Center and students will be clicking on 'color' to go to a lesson.
