EducaPoles

http://www.educapoles.org

Use Polar Bear day on 27 Feb to introduce your students to the Arctic and Antarctic regions.

What is the site about?

EducaPoles is International Polar Foundation's educational site. It aims to educate young people about the importance of the Polar regions and how Climate Change will have global consequences.

Why was it chosen as site of the week?

It was chosen because:

  • Polar Bear Day is on 27 Feb 2008.
  • The site contains lots of information about the Polar ice caps:
    • The flora and fauna that live there.
    • How snow and ice is changing over time.
    • The local and global consequences of changes in sea temperatures
    • The skills and techniques used in polar research.

How can it be used as an educational resource?

The Polar Bear Picture Gallery could be shown on a data projector or whiteboard to stimulate students interest in the region.

The Animations available cover a range of topics: flora, fauna, ice structures, climate change and many more. These are suitable for whole class teaching.

Students could use the website individually to research an aspect that interested them, and present their findings to the class.

There are Teacher Dossiers available (sent by email - approx. 30mins after request) on a range of subjects. They include information sheets and lesson plans.

Quizzes allow students to see how much they have learned.
