International Year of the Potato 2008
http://www.internationalyearofthepotato.ie/
Irish site developed for 2008 to promote awareness of the nutritional and health benefits of the potato in the Irish diet.
What is the site about?
Potatoes!! It contains articles about the history of potatoes, nutritional information, recipes and lots of facts about potatoes in Ireland. It outlines the Potato Growing Challenge for Primary schools.
Why was it chosen as site of the week? It was chosen because:
- Now is the time to plant potatoes - Potato Growing Kits will arrive in schools this week.
- Different parts of the site will suit students of all ages.
- It contains information for parents and teachers.
How can it be used as an educational resource?
For younger children, Meet the Spuds shows potato varieties as cartoon characters. This could be used as an introduction for an art class, to inspire students to draw or model their own potato characters.
The history of the potato and Famine pages provide source material for projects based on potatoes.
For older students the International site will be useful. Interesting figures for production and consumption of potatoes around the world are shown.
Facts and diagrams describing potato plants and varieties are also included.
Secondary school students of Home Economics, Science and Economics will find useful information in the Factsheet Section.
