Sea Stallion - Viking Ship
http://www.seastallion.dk
Official site of the Sea Stallion, the replica Viking ship which sailed to Ireland from Roskilde, arriving on 14th. August 2007.
What is the site about?
An excellent introduction for students to the Vikings, it provides lots of information about the Sea Stallion project. This project involved building a replica of the Skuldelev 2, using traditional methods. A crew of 65 then sailed from Roskilde in Denmark to Dublin - a journey of 1,400 nautical miles. There are maps, videos and photographs of the journey, as well as diary entries by the crew members. Why was it chosen as site of the week? It was chosen because:
- The site contains an incredible amount of information about the Vikings - who they were, how they lived, their boatbuilding methods, as well as the Vikings in Ireland.
- A comprehensive set of assignments and exercises for Primary and Secondary school students has been developed, encouraging students to carry out research on different aspects of the Vikings.
- The ship is now on display in the National Museum of Ireland, where it will remain until June 2008, when it will set out on it's return trip to Roskilde.
How can it be used as an educational resource?
The Sitemap enables users to navigate through the site and find relevant information.
The assignments and exercises for Primary and Secondary students provides an ideal starting point for teachers in designing class plans based on the information on the site. For Secondary school students, it is most suitable for use as a reference for History or cross-curricular projects.
Primary school students may find the links on the Viking Themepage more engaging and accessible.
