Site of the week

Watch your Space
http://www.watchyourspace.ie/

Advice and support for young Internet users.

What is the site about?

It's aim is to raise awareness of Internet safety issues and promote safe, responsible practice by young people when online. It is part of the NCTE's Webwise Internet safety initiative targeted at teenagers and young adults.

Why was it chosen as site of the week?

It was chosen because:

  • It recently launched the following awareness video called, Be creative! Be yourself! Be in control! covering the issue of cyberbullying.
Get the Flash Player to see this video.

  • It is a valuable and engaging site for exploring Internet safety issues for Safer Internet Day (Feb 10).
  • The site is divided into 6 main areas, each containing strong and clearly presented safety messages.
  • Seven video clips of interviews with young expert users of social networking sites, such as Bebo, mobile phones and the Internet in general are shown.
  • It covers practical information and advice on a selection of online activities such as dealing with and reporting serious issues, online publishing and uploading images.
  • A poster is available for download.

How can it be used as an educational resource?

The site is ideal as an introduction to general Internet safety issues and the "dos and don'ts" of online behaviour regarding social networking sites.
