Get web wise and celebrate European Safer Internet Day on February 6.
What is the site about?
Webwise.ie educates on safer usage of the Internet. Aimed at students, teachers and parents it also promotes the positive aspects of using the Internet and informs on how to deal with the risks.
The site will require Shockwave and broadband.
Why was it chosen as site of the week?
It was chosen because:
- It is a primary source of information in Ireland for European Safer Internet Day
- The educational resources on Internet safety for primary and post primary students are engaging and interactive, see the videos and tips in the Surfwise section
- It covers information and advice on a selection of online activities such as chatting, surfing, sharing files and gaming from the perspectives of what it means, what the risks and how to act responsibily
- The site will appeal to visual learners as it is a rich source of video clips. It also includes a streamed video, presented by Ian Dempsey outlining online safety considerations for parents and teachers
- Sample Acceptable Use Policies and Letters to Parents are available to download
- A list of related publications and links are presented
How can it be used as an educational resource?
At primary level the site could be integrated into the safety component of the Social Personal and Health Education curriculum. Aside from using site as a general source of information and advice on online safety there are several interactive lesons specifically tailored for primary students. These include the Webwise Online Adventures, and corresponding teachers' notes on Learning to Surf Safely.
Post primary students may get involved in the argument, Is the Internet Bad for Music? .
