World Maths Day - 5th March 2008

Worldmathsday.com

Site available until 16 March. If you were unable to register your school due to the volume of traffic on the site use the 'Contact Us' link at the top of the page. We will reply asap - within a couple of hours.

Register your students to join millions of students world-wide competing in timed Mental Arithmetic games. Once registered they can begin to practice immediately. The "event" will begin for Irish students on Tuesday 4th March at 11am and finish 48 hours later.

What is the site about?

It involves students from all over the world playing against each other in real-time battles of mental arithmetic. The level of the questions suits ages 5 to 18 years. 5 year olds will do addition with numbers up to 10, whereas older students will do more difficult mental arithmetic. Students have 60 seconds to answer as many questions as possible.

Registration is straightforward - once you register your school you are sent an email with your password. You then enter your classes and students with each student being assigned a name and password. You can print the usernames and passwords instantly.

Students full names are not shown on the site - only first names are used during the games.

Why was it chosen as site of the week?

It was chosen because:

  • World Maths day is on March 5th.
  • Students will enjoy competing against children in different countries.
  • It may improve students' attitudes to mental arithmetic, as the games are exciting and motivating.
  • Accuracy will improve, as three strikes means you are eliminated from the game.
  • Further Instructions gives detailed information on setting up a class.

How can it be used as an educational resource?

It will work best in a computer room where each student has access to a computer.

All of the games will be played in real-time with students from all corners of the globe. They will discover that at certain times during the day they are likely to play students from particular parts of the world. You can use this information to introduce World Time Zones in a meaningful context.

Curricular Mapping
Mathematics: It will reinforce the "Number" strand, particularly the "Operations" strand unit - covering addition, subtraction, multiplication and division.
Geography: Useful for the "Planet Earth in Space" strand unit in the "Natural Environments" strand.

Your Comments:

I used it with my resource/learning support students and they really enjoyed it as did kids in mainstream classes. Some even logged on at home! Can we continue to use it after March 5th?
