Assessments

Q. What type of assessments are used at primary and post primary level?

A. At primary  and post primary level children are usually tested for reading, language, maths, spelling and auditory perception. Usually this is done by individual schools at the end or beginning of the school year for the purposes of evaluating childrens' performance and planning support structures. Tests are carried out in a planned way by a person who has received training in the selection, adminstration and interpretation of test data. This data is stored securely and used in a discretionary manner in accordance with set practices and procedures outlined by the Department of Education and Science. Grants are also available from the Department of Education and Science.

A list of assessments available to Post Primary schools may be accessed from the Department of Education Circular entitled Grants towards the purchase of test materials - Post Primary (Word Document)

Mainstream assessments at Post Primary level include the Junior CertificateJCSP (Junior Certificate Schools Programme,  Leaving Certificate, LCAP (Leaving Certificate Applied Programme) and LCVP (Leaving Certificate Vocational Programme.

Another type of assessment is the assessment of learning disabilities, which is relevant to both primary and post primary levels. The National Educational Psychological Service is responsible for this type of assessment and also provides psychological services and advice and support to schools. Their overall aim is to help students to develop to their potential and maximise the benefits of their educational experiences.
