Site of the Week: 8th September 2008

Follow the Fleet
http://www.imdo.ie/followthefleet/index.asp
Follow our merchant ships from port to port.

What is the site about?

The site, developed the Irish Maritime Development Office, is all about ships, their functions and Ireland's relationship with the sea. The main purpose of the site is to follow the fleet live as they sail from port to port.

Why was it chosen as site of the week?

It was chosen because:

  • There is a helpful demo that shows you how to follow the fleet live
  • Six main lessons are presented, which include the fleet, the crew, weather, Ireland and the sea, cargo and ports
  • These lessons are comprehensive, clearly written and carry a useful summary and a follow the fleet link
  • Each lesson is enhanced by relevant images, interactive images, video clips and/or animated diagrams
  • There is a dedicated Teachers section which includes a helpful "Content Overview"
  • There is also a "Did you know" section at the end of each lesson.

How can it be used as an educational resource?

The lessons are aimed at covering various stands and units in the Science and Geography primary curriculum but would appeal to anyone with an interest in Irish ships.

It is ideal for an individual-based or group based research study on ships. Students could choose a fleet ship to study and document their research and informaiton in a scrapbook, online presentation or poster. A data collection exercise on the location of their chosen ship could be charted on a daily/weekly basis.
