View Ordnance Survey Ireland (OSi) maps and aerial photographs. Post-primary.

What is the site about?

The recently launched Scoilnet Maps provides Geography teachers and students in second-level schools with online access to detailed Ordnance Survey Ireland (OSi) maps and aerial photographs for use in their teaching and learning.

The following maps are available from the site:

  • OSi 1:5 000
  • OSi 1:50 000
  • OSi 1:450 000
  • OSi 1:600 000
  • OSi 6" Historic
  • OSi Orthophotos
  • All of OSNI mapping data
  • OS Opendata for the UK
  • Teleatlas street mapping for Europe

Why was it chosen as site of the week?

    It was chosen because:

    • It's the only website where detailed maps (1:5 000 OSi) of Ireland are freely available for educational use
    • You can easily view, print and compare OSi maps and aerial photographs
    • Historic maps dating back to the 1830's are accessible and these can be viewed in parallel with regular maps for comparative analysis
    • Other resources such as photos or videos may be added by teachers upon registration and these can then be "georeferenced" and searched for
    • Outside of school, all second-level teachers can access Scoilnet Maps via log-in. If log-in is required, please contact the site for more information.

How can it be used as an educational resource?

The site has relevance to the revised Leaving Certificate Geography curriculum.  Teachers can access Scoilnet Maps in their school via the Schools Broadband Network and home access is also facilitated through personal log-in.

The historic maps may be of interest to history teachers and students as they are good examples of primary source materials.
