Ireland will hold the EU presidency from January 2004.

Ireland will hold the Presidency of the EU Council of Ministers from 1 January to 30 June 2004. Every six months a different member state takes over the EU presidency.

This website will provide up-to-date information and materials on the Irish EU Presidency in 2004 and should help you in understanding the significance of this presidency.

Currently there are fifteen European Union member states. During Ireland’s presidency in 2004, 10 new member states will be formally welcomed as members of the EU. The EU will then have a population of up to 450 million citizens in 25 member states.

Ireland last held the presidency in 1996. The Presidency commands an International focus on Ireland, which provides us with rich opportunities to demonstrate and share our experiences culturally, socially and politically. For six months Ireland will be the face of the European Union and will act on behalf of the European Union.
