What is a Wiki?

A wiki is a collection of web pages which allows users to add and edit content collectively. Probably the best example of a wiki is Wikipedia, "the free enclyclopaedia that anyone can edit". Tools that enable the creation of wikis include Wetpaint, Wikispace and PBwiki.

5 reasons why schools should use wikis


1. It facilitates collaboration on documents, such as an essays written by the entire class
2. Teachers can easily track progress on collaborative projects as all student work is in the one place
3. It improves writing, reading, editing, reflection,"group" authoring skills and collaborative problem solving
4. Students might be encouraged to contribute to a wikibook (educational textbook that anyone can edit)
5. It fosters social skills and the ability to compromise
