Changing Attitudes towards Irish Language and Culture  back
9. Compulsory Irish Abolished: 1973
At this press conference in 1973 the Minister for Education, Richard Burke, announced that students would no longer need to pass Irish to be awarded an Intermediate or Leaving Certificate.

The Government acknowledged that this compulsory pass element had created antagonism for many towards the Irish language. However, he pointed out that the Government was not undermining the language and that there was national support for it. The policy of respect for and promotion of the Irish language and culture would be maintained.
