Site of the Week: 25th May 2009

German.ie
http://www.german.ie/
New resources for German teachers and students. (Post Primary)

What is the site about?
Recently launched, German.ie is a portal for online resources relevant to the post primary curriculum. Aimed at teachers and students, it features dossiers, videos, a forum and more. The development of the site is a result of collaboration between Scoilnet, the Department of Education (Inspectorate), the Goethe Institute, the German Teachers' Association and the Austrian Embassy in Ireland.

Why was it chosen as site of the week?

  •  The site contains 256 resources reviewed by teachers in Irish classrooms
  • These resources are searchable in the Resource Finder, where you can choose between Junior and Senior Cycle
  • 11 topics are available in the Resource Finder including Culture, Current Affairs, Festivals, School, Shopping, Travel, etc
  • Resources covering a range of skills are presented, for example, listening, reading, grammar, writing, speaking
  • It includes dossiers on Die Umwelt, Youth Culture, Fashion and Music
  • Each dossier contains a description of the topic and additional relevant links
  • The site features news and events in addition to the ability to submit and share a resource

How can it be used as an educational resource?

The site is probably best used by post primary teachers and  students as a source of learning, consolidation of learning and revision of the key skills relating to the German syllabus.

1. Encourage your students to sign up to the newsletter and use this as a means of improving vocabularly and reading skills. Ask a student to report topics featured in the newsletter to the class.

2. Consider using the resources on the Videos for learning and Teaching German page in conjunction with a data projector. These cover many areas of the curriculum and will span over several class periods.

3. If you are in the computer lab ask students to pick a skill and browse the resources in the Resource Finder that are available for their chosen skill. This invites students to take charge of their own learning and fosters a sense of independence. Get them to report on how they think their skill has improved from using these resources.
