Site of the Week: 26th January 2008
Anti Bullying Campaign http://www.antibullyingcampaign.ie/ Resources and tools to reduce bullying in secondary schools.
What is the site about? The site is a support site for Irish secondary teachers who are interested in implementing an anti-bullying campaign in their school. Registration is required.
Why was it chosen as site of the week?
It was chosen because:
- There is a wide selection of excellent free resources and tools, dealing with all aspects on how to implement an anti-bullying campaign
- Although these resources were developed in 2004, they have been further developed and adapted to respond to a research based study of bullying in Irish schools
- The site is very informative and offers practical resources such as teacher presentations, reports and factsheets in relation to two strands, namely, Raising Awareness and Dealing with Incidents
- It covers tricky areas such as the role of staff and management, confidiently and the no-blame approach
- Resources have been piloted in a school in Dublin with the result that the number of students bullied was reduced by half in three years
- There is a discussion forum and area where teachers can share their resources.
How can it be used as an educational resource? Currently, there are two modules designed for use in SPHE class - 1. Belonging and Integrating, 2. Communication Skills. These offer ideas on how to get classes exploring the concept of friendship, different bullying scenarios and the various types of agression and repsonses.
The shared area also contains material suitable for using in the classroom. Consider a discussion based around poems written by children who were bullied.
