New York Philharmonic - Kidzone http://www.nyphilkids.org/main.phtml? Have you ever seen an oboe up close? Learn about all the instruments in a orchestra.
What is the site about?
This is a highly engaging and interactive site about the New York symphony orchestra and orchestras in general. You can explore the many instruments, composers and compositions via video, audio and text or create your own compositions. It's most suited to primary students.
There are eight main areas within the site; Game Room, Instrument Storage Lab, Dressing Rooms, Instrument Lab, Musican's Lounge, Composition Workshop, Composers' Gallery and Newstand.
QuickTime, Shockwave, Real Player, and Flash are required and can be downloaded from the Help section.
Why was it chosen as site of the week?
It was chosen because:
- There is information on approx 60 composers which may be sorted by style, country, name or birthday
- Audio clips of compositions accompany each composer
- The cartoon-like presentations make the site visually engaging and interesting
- Different types of instruments in the
"Instrument Storage Room" may be explored via reading about them, watching a video or listening to an audio clip
- The "Instrument Lab" allows you to invent your own instrument
- Students can also create their own compositions in as many as seven different ways in the "Composer's Workshop"
- You can play games, for example, a musical scavenger hunt where you hunt through the site looking for clues to claim a trophy.
How can it be used as an educational resource? The site covers most aspects of the Music curriculum at primary level and is perfect for the following:
- A teacher demonstration of the various instruments using a projector and an Internet connection in the classroom
- A student exploration of the various instruments followed by completing the activities in the "Game Room"
- Group compositions using favourite instruments
- A teacher-led presentation of various composers followed by a class quiz
- The creation of artwork, poems, stories or podcasts in response to a chosen composition.
