What is this site about?

This site offers a wealth of information about the history of the Burren area, its landscapes and ecosystems.  The Learning Zone provides numerous resources for teachers and students of all levels to learn about different features of this environment. It also includes details about local communities, news and regularly updated events.


 
Why was it chosen as Site of the Week?
  • There is an engaging map of the Burren area with pop-out information of the main sites of interest
  • It provides a printable overview quiz for both Primary and Post-Primary levels
  • The burrenlearning section is an excellent source of puzzles to investigate the flora and fauna, ecology, geology and archaeology of the region.
  • The timeline presents students a well-detailed and interactive history of the Burren landscape, stretching from the time it was created approximately 340 million years ago, right up to modern times
  • Some good quality images of animal and plant life typical of the Burren are available as well

How can it be used as an educational resource?

This site is ideal in teacher-led situations with a data-projector or interactive whiteboard to stimulate an interest in natural environments. The quizzes can be used to consolidate students’ understanding of what they have learned. It can also be used in individual scenarios and as part of project work to research a particular aspect of the Burren.
