Join an archaeologist in exploring an ancient egyptian tomb.

What is
the site about?

The site presents a sequence of short interactive activities based on the exploration of an egyptian burial chamber, statues, ancient gods, canopy jars and a coffin.  It requires and seeks to improve on mapping, decoding, matching, reading and basic problem solving skills.

Flash player is required to view this site.

Why was it chosen as site of the week?

It was chosen because:

  • It's simple, easy to follow, highly interactive, sequential and visually engaging
  • Facts and infomation are clearly displayed and relate to each interactive activity
  • Actual photos of the burial chamber are used which make the adventure more realistic
  • It includes engaging problems such as decoding hieroglyphs, mapping, matching etc.,
  • A magnifying glass is available for closer inspection of statues, the coffin and other artefacts
  • Language is simple, appropriately pitched and concise, although the site would really benefit from a glossary
  • After you've completed the sequence of activities you get a certificate.

How can it be used as an educational resource?

This site is best used as an individual based reinforcement activity, following a lesson on burial chambers and how ancient civilisations bury their dead.  It is ideal for one-to one computer use at home or in school. Students could use a notepad to document points of interest to them or create a short presentation based on what they learned.

Curriculum Mapping:

The site is relevant to the both the primary and post primary school syllabi. Special needs students would also benefit from the visual nature and concise language contained within the activities.

Post Primary: Junior Cycle: Ancient Civilisations
Primary: 3rd, 4th, 5th, 6th classes: Early People/Ancient Societies

Extension Activities

The site lists a number of other complimentary activities to deepen knowledge of the subject. These include:
Dress like an Egyptian,
A Stela of a Tale
