“The Habitable Planet” is a
multimedia website created by some of the leading American scientific
academics and researchers, and is geared towards post-primary teachers.
It focuses on various facets of environmental science such as the
atmosphere, oceans, climate change, population dynamics and energy
sources.

Why was it chosen as site of the week?• It contains 13 units with detailed information on a wide range of geographical, environmental and agricultural subjects
• Each unit includes a 28 minute video which can be used as an introduction to the subject
• There are 5 interactive lab activities which cover the main units
• Visual resources are provided in the form of animations, photographs and graphics such as diagrams and charts
• For each unit there is a PDF version of the online content
• The comprehensive glossary offers definitions of many terms used throughout the website.
• It received a Webby Award as an outstanding educational resource.
How can it be used as an educational resource?Although some sections of this website may be more appropriate for university students, much of the content is extremely useful for Senior Cycle students and teachers for use in extension activities. The printable PDFs can be used as teachers’ notes, and the videos and graphs can be used with overhead projectors or IWBs as visual aids.
