Site of the Week: Mon 3rd Nov 2008

Hands On Scotland
http://www.handsonscotland.co.uk/
Toolkit on how to promote positive mental wellbeing in young people.

What is the site about?
Hands On Scotland is an online resource for anybody working with or caring for children and young people. The website provides practical information and techniques on how to respond helpfully to children and young people's troubling behaviour and gives advice on how to help them flourish.

Why was it chosen as site of the week?

It was chosen because:

  • It has relevance to teachers and parents of children of all ages
  • It's an extremely comprehensive site covering 14 main sections and approximately 125 issues
  • Difficult and sensitive topics are covered such as anger, aggresssion, self harm, bereavement, inattention and overactivity etc
  • Information is well presented, consistent in style, and includes a description of the behaviour, practical advice on how to respond and information on when to seek further support
  • Video clips of specialist workers speaking on most issues are available

How can it be used as an educational resource?

This is really a support site for teachers, parents and carers rather than an educational resource for students. It may help you gain a deeper understanding of and ability to respond to certain behaviours and issues and this in turn will assist you at home or in school when dealing with children.
