Site of the week:TES I Board
TES I-Board
http://www.tes.iboard.co.uk/
Hundreds of interactive resources designed for whiteboards/data-projectors and independent learning. Covers most subjects at lower primary level.

What is the site about?

I-Board resources cover Numeracy, Literacy, ICT, History, Geography, R.E and Science at lower primary and preschool level. Resources are primarily designed for use on an interactive whiteboard and aim to "enable teachers to direct their pupils learning and create a learning dialogue around the resource."

Designed by Steven Rawlins, an ex-teacher and Interactive Whiteboard trainer, I - Board has now been acquired by the Times Educational Supplement.

Note* Site requires flash and is occasionally slow to load.

Why was it chosen as site of the week?
It was chosen because:

  • There are over 500 hundred visually engaging, simple-to-use interactive resources pitched at lower primary, preschool and special educational needs
  • Resources cover many areas of the UK currciculum inlcuding Numeracy, Literacy, ICT, History, Geography, R.E, ICT and Science. Most of these are relevant to the Irish curriculum
  • Audio is integrated in a valuable and meaningful way into most activities. See Label My Body
  • The New Literacy section (for example, A Day in the Park) is ideal for sentence formation and improving language. Again it has integrated audio well.
  • There is a useful mini encyclopaedia and transport timeline in the history section
  • Each resource pops up in a screen that contains its url, thumbnail image, launch button, description and instructions
  • There is a additional guidance section on how to use the resource and a feedback facility for each activity
  • The Early Years section covers three main areas comprehensively, inlcuding Communication Language and Literacy, Knowledge and Understanding of the World, Problem Solving Reasoning and Numeracy.
How can it be used as an educational resource?
This site is perfect for use on a data-projector or interactive whiteboard in a teacher led situation. It is also suitable for independent learning and encourages self correction.  Letting students "loose" on the site might be counter-productive as it is so vast and varied.

Curriculum Mapping
As there are over 500 activities on this site it is impossible to map each one to the curriculum. However, the general curricular areas covered at primary level are all follows:

English: Oral, Reading and Writing in all strands.
Maths: Number, Measures, Shape and Space
SESE Science: Living Things, Energy and Forces
SESE History: Life Society Work and Culture in the Past, Myself and My Family, Continuity and Change Over Time,
SESE Geography: Natural Environments, Human Environments
