Site of the Week: 18 May 2009

Lichens of Lough Corrib
http://www.lichensofloughcorrib.com
A student study of lichens in Lough Corrib.

What is the site about?
The website is the result of an ongoing study conducted by three post primary students in the Galway region. It focuses on the abundance, variety and significance of lichens on the islands of Lough Corrib. Lichens were identified, logged, chronicled and photographed by the students and presented on their site.

Why was it chosen as site of the week?

  • It's an opportunity to showcase a good example of a student study
  • Featuring six main pages, the site is clearly written, informative and interesting
  • A map for each island and area studied is provided
  • Some good quality images of the lichens are presented
  • Information about project planning and the project process is available
  • The site is up for an ECO-UNESCO award on the 20th May
  • It's the first time a site produced by Irish students has been featured as Site of the week

How can it be used as an educational resource?

It's best used for Geography in the following ways:

As a point of reference on lichens in the Lough Corrib area
To conduct a comparative study on the different types of lichens in the area
To gather data on specific locations regarding various types of lichens
To get a deeper understanding of their significance.

View the site independently as part of a research study or (as a teacher) on a data projector, highlighting areas of interest to the class. Consider a similar study and create class quiz or multimedia presentation.
