Site of the Week

www.noticenature.ie

Find out about ecosystems and help protect biodiversity in Ireland.

What is this site about?

This website is part of a campaign to raise awareness about the importance of biodiversity.  As part of the 2010 International Year of Biodiversity, it hopes to encourage people in agricultural, business, tourism, and construction industries, as well as local communities, to take action and to protect one of our vital natural resources. There is also a special section for teachers and students who want to find out more and participate.

Why was it chosen as Site of the Week?
  • It is particularly relevant as this year is the International Biodiversity Year.
  • The Junior page provides a lot information about what biodiversity means and how to protect it in easy to understand language
  • Useful internal and external  links are available to various downloadable factsheets and posters in Irish and English such as the “An Nádúr i do Ghairdín” factsheet, printable lesson plans and activity sheets for teachers
  • There are seasonal guides advising what plants and animals to watch out for. Check out the Summer Guide
  • There are links to different games such as the The Bio-Daversity Code and the Notice Nature Crossword
  • Children can view other children’s photos and upload their own

How can this be used as an educational resource?

This site can be used in project work or outdoor excursions to document plants and animals. It also motivates students to take an interest in nature by asking them to upload their own photos.
