What is the site about?

The site presents a series of virtual field trips to laboratories and observatories worldwide which examine the formation of the universe, the creation of matter, the shaping of the earth and the story of life itself.


Why was it chosen as site of the week?

It was chosen because:

  • Topics are covered in great detail. These are as such; DNA, Life in Antartica, Space, Matter, Biodiversitry and Astrobiology
  • Each observatory is depicted as a sub site, all of which follow the same format, i.e., Place, People, Tools, Ideas and Live
  • An excellent insight into the tools used in conducting scientific research is conveyed
  • The site is content-rich but also contains mixture of invaluable live Internet broadcasts (Webcasts) and interactive presentations
  • It introduces the extraordinary people behind these achievements

How can it be used as an educational resource?

This site is definitely intended for those interested in the Sciences and scientfic research. It may be considered quite advanced in parts but nevertheless would make an ideal starting point for students interested in inquiry-based learning. The site is a fantastic source of supplementary information for Biology and Physics at Senior cycle level.
