| What is the site about?
“Mapping Our World” is an
interactive website created by Oxfam that examines the relationship
between maps and globes. It encourages students to question the purpose,
use and whether there is a "correct" version of the global map by
introducing a variety of world map projections.
The site is best viewed in Internet Explorer 5 or higher. Flash is
also required. Download it here. |
Why was it chosen as site of the week?It was chosen because:
- It contains three lessons, each of which comprises of about 40 minutes of material including videos and interactive activities
- Animations are highly graphical and engaging. See the Chat Show in Lesson 2 where two characters from history Peters and Eckert IV argue over who has the better map of the world
- There are excellent teacher’s notes for each of the lessons, which offer detailed overviews, aims and objectives, as well as guides on how to use the resources, and further useful information
- Most sections contain a zoom function which is useful for closer map inspection
- It also explains how to make use of globes, atlases, maps, photographs and satellite images
- Pupils will appreciate differences in ways of thinking, working and viewing the world.
How can it be used as an educational resource? This is an ideal site for use on a data-projector or interactive whiteboard in a teacher-led scenario. Interactive activities
and animations are particularly suitable for visual learners.
Curriculum Mapping:Although it is a UK website, it is useful for mainly primary and junior cycle post-primary geography students.
