Poisson Rouge/Red Fish Soup

http://www.poissonrouge.com/poissonrouge.php

What is the site about?

An activity website for young primary school pupils with lots of games, activities and animations.  There are no written instructions (except for teachers/adults!) and so encourages exploration and discovery learning.

Why was it chosen as site of the week?

  1. The site is visually engaging
  2. There are no instructions for pupils which leads to lots of active and investigative learning
  3. It has over 200 games, activities and animations to choose from
  4. The site is easy to use and has many engaging features such as sound and visuals
  5. It can be used both as a teaching tool in particular topics or as a fun activity break for pupils
  6. It has a number of printable sheets for colouring
  7. The site has a user guide for teachers and other adults.

How can it be used as an educational resource?

Firstly, click on the English symbol at the bottom of the screen to get the English version (although not needed for pupils as the site is purely visual for them).

The website is very much activity-based.  There are over 200 in total to choose from.  Have fun finding them all - the pupils certainly will!  There are no instructions on the site and the creators say there are some good reasons for that:

"Most people, even adults, do not read instructions, children who cannot read will ignore written text anyhow, but most importantly for us, there is no need and in fact, instructions get in the way of the experience : the navigation through the various sections of the site is purposefully simple and intuitive, the functionalities within games are carefully thought out to afford a maximum of possibilities while keeping that special relationship to the real World."

It can be used to reinforce prior learning or used as an introduction or activity within a topic.  There are many to choose from, and to help teachers and other adults, a user guide has been provided ( http://www.poissonrouge.com/bigfish/en/userguide.html).  There are many subject areas covered including Maths, English, Art, Music and Science.  Topics include clothes, transport, numbers, shapes, volume, colour, Newton's cradle, the alphabet and sounds.  It will take time to explore everything, but the pupils will love doing this anyway for you!
