Site of the Week: Discover Primary Science

http://www.primaryscience.ie

Learn about science with these fun and engaging games and activities (Primary Level)

  What is this site about?

This site is run by the Discover Science and Engineering awareness programme, which is managed by Forfás, and aims to “develop creativity in our children, show them how important science is to our everyday lives and more importantly how much fun it can be!” It is aimed at both Primary and Post-Primary students, and provides resources and training for teachers who register their schools in the initiative.

Why was it chosen as Site of the Week?

  • The children’s section provides an excellent source of games, such as the Lunchbox Challenge, as well as colouring templates for younger children
  • The teacher’s section provides plenty of Science and Maths resources in the form of videos, PDfs and links to relevant external websites
  • An extensive gallery of photographs, videos and other documents featuring children carrying out different activities and experiments is also available, and encourages children to upload their own
  • Teachers may also register their school in the Discover Primary Science Programme , which is a great way of encouraging and recognising pupils’ work.

How can it be used as an educational resource?

This site will motivate children to think more about Science by helping them carry out their own experiments, which they can then upload. The games can be used individually at home to consolidate what they have already learned. The videos and photographs can also be used with data-projectors or interactive whiteboards to stimulate the children’s interest and as an introduction to various topics.
