What is the site about?

The site hosts a package of interactive games, stories and resources specifically designed for emergent readers. It comprises a nine part guided reading story about a singing zebra following his dreams, making friends and seeking adventure.

The main sections of interest are as follows:

  • Interactive Reading Games - Includes High Frequency Words, Consonants, Long Vowel Phonemes etc
  • Guided Reading Stories - Indexes the nine parts of the story
  • Literacy Worksheets - Covers Sentence Endings, Capital Letters, Full Stops, Alphabetical Order (Pdfs)
  • Songs - Three songs (approx. 1 Mb each)
There is, however, a commerical element to the site. Scoilnet does not endorse nor review this element.

Why was it chosen as Site of the Week?

It was chosen because:

  • It's highly engaging and very suitable for large screen projection or individual learning
  • There are a wide range of activities which have been tested and approved by teachers in the US
  • It includes guided reading discussion sheets that can be used to discuss the story before and after reading each part
  • Printable literacy worksheets focusing on specific learning objectives (e.g. full stops and capital letters) are also available for each story
  • Lesson plans for each section are included.

This site is perfect for display on a large screen in a teacher led context or individual learning at school or at home.
