What is the site about?

SHOW®/World allows you to look at the world by resizing countries on an animated map according to a series of global issues or subjects. These global issues are wide ranging and are based on datasets provided by the most authoritative sources in their fields, such as Amnesty International, UNESCO, Unicef, Oxfam etc.

Broadband and Flash Player recommended.

Why was it chosen as site of the week?

  • It's an engaging, easy-to-use visual means of accessing key data relating to demographics, education, economics, transport, government, war and conflict and other
  • Approximately 150 animated maps are available under the categories people, planet, politics, business and living
  • A summary of the data is available on the right hand side, which you can also sort by rank
  • A paragraph explaining each subject is presented contextualising the accompanying animated map
  • There are zoom in/out capabilities
  • You can embed an animation into your webpage or download data in a excel file
  • There's a Your Map section where you can send and have your dataset featured on the site

How can it be used as an educational resource?

This site is perfect for the following teaching and learning scenarios:

  • Whole class teaching using a dataprojector/whiteboard for introducing or supplementing a geography lesson
  • As a revision aid in an independent or personalised learning scenario
  • As a source of reference for project and collaborative based learning.

It is suitable for both primary and post primary curricula.
