Webwise on Facebook

http://www.facebook.com/webwise

What is the site about?

To mark Safer Internet Day 2011 in Ireland, a new online resource has been launched to help parents to get involved in what their children are doing online. Webwise on Facebook has a range of content designed to give parents (and teachers!) the skills and confidence to intervene effectively in their use of the internet.

Why was it chosen as site of the week?

  1. Tuesday, February 8th, is Safer Internet Day
  2. The website ties in with events taking place around the country such as Parent evenings and Talks in Schools
  3. It has videos from parenting experts
  4. There are interactive cartoons that teach children the golden rules for using the web
  5. The website contains a selection of publications that provide information and advice
  6. It links in with the main Webwise website, which contains further advice and materials such as 'Surfwise', 'Chatwise', 'Be Safe, Be Webwise', 'Think B4U Click' and 'Watch_Your_Space'

How can it be used as an educational resource?

As This website can be used to highlight Internet Safety and encourage parents to get involved.  It is a great way for schools to link with home and promote safer internet use among pupils.  The website provides links and resources that can be used by both parents and teachers.

This site is an extension of Webwise, where there is an extensive range of materials for classroom use.
