What is the site about?:

The site comprehensively covers the subject of art history and includes, descriptions, analyses and commentaries on more than five hundred artworks, artists, styles of art and periods of art history. This is done mainly by means of videos, podcasts and clearly written descriptions.


Why was it chosen as site of the week?:

It was chosen because:
  • It's visually stimulating, interactive and comprehensive
  • It is easily navigated according to timeline, style, artist, or theme
  • High quality photographs and approx 500 videos and podcasts are used to enhance presentations
  • Podcasts and screen-casts have an interesting style in that they are based on spontaneous conversations about artworks
  • Its authors are art history professors with experience of online and offline teaching
  • It has a strong collaborative element and encourges users to share and contribute, therefore including content from Flickr, Vimeo, Dipity, and YouTube, in addition to linking to the authors on Twitter
  • A blog and RSS feed are also provided and regularly updated
  • The site is recommended by the Art Teachers Association of Ireland

How can it be used as an educational resource?

This site is suitable for use in the following multiple scenarios:
  • Teacher instruction on an interactive whiteboard/data projector
  • Personalised learning, particularly new learning and reinforcement learning in a one-to-one computer situation. Students may also like to download the podacasts to their iPods/mp3 players
  • Project work: either school or homebased
