Site of the Week: Tree Council of Ireland

Tree Council of Ireland

http://www.treecouncil.ie/treeweek/treeweek.html

What is the site about?

Website promoting National Tree Week, which is an annual, week-long festival celebrating all positive aspects of trees in our lives and environment.  A programme of events, pupil worksheets, teacher notes and details of a photo competition are all provided.

Why was it chosen as site of the week?

  1. March 6th to 12th is National Tree Week
  2. Interesting materials and information about trees and local landscapes
  3. Encourages pupils to get involved with their local environment
  4. 2011 is International Year of Forests
  5. Worksheets for various class group levels
  6. Worksheets available as Gaeilge
  7. Teacher notes are provided
  8. Details and link to Project Forest for Transition Year

How can it be used as an educational resource?

The website contains information on the benefits of planting trees and this could be used in SESE Geography lessons.  The encouragement to get involved in National Tree Week also means that pupils can work together in groups or as a class and are actively involved in something very practical.

The pupils could get involved in helping the local environment.  Doing this promotes investigative and project based learning.
