What is the site about?
The National Library of Ireland has recently provided online access to over 20,000 photographic images from the Lawrence, Poole and Independent Newspapers collections. This is the largest collection of images relating to Ireland in the world.
Why was it chosen as site of the week?
It was chosen because:
- It includes an extensive collection of digitised glass plate negatives from the National photographic Archive
- The images in the Lawrence collection capture town and country scenes from the period 1870 -1914
- The Independent Newspaper collection covers the period 1912 -1936 and has a particular focus on sports and politics
- The Poole collection focuses on studio portraits, social and political events, architecture and industry in the South East of Ireland
- Images are accompanied by basic information such as date, location, etc
- All images can be easily accessed via the search function or by browsing each of the three collections
How can it be used as an educational resource?
This is an amazing collection of primary source material covering many aspects of Irish life from 1870-1914. It ties in with the History curriculum at both primary and post primary levels and may be used as part of a research study, student projects, teacher notes, revision aids and reinforcement learning. Specifically it relates to the following strands/themes within the curriculum: Primary Working as a Historian Local studies Life, Society, Work and Culture in the past Politics, Conflict and Society
