Games to help 5-7yr olds with reading & phonics.

What is the site about?

The site is designed to help 5-7 yr olds develop their knowledge of phonics by discovering the relationship between letters and sounds in a fun way. It is a support site to the BBC TV Series and the National Literacy Strategy's Framework for Teaching in the UK but is, however, suitable for home use and for use by schools not following the strategy.

Shockwave 7 and Real Player are required.

Why was it chosen as site of the week?

It was chosen because:

  • It gives comprehensive coverage of the following areas: consonant-vowel-consonant sounds, consonant clusters, long vowel sounds and high frequency words
  • The games and activities are engaging and are divided up into 5 modules, each of which, focus on a different area of phonics
  • Videos are presented on how to write letters. See the Magic Pencil
  • It contains a selection of print and do material, for example, a board game, a phoneme word lotto and lyrics to relevant songs
  • The teachers' and parents' sections gives a useful overview of the site

How can it be used as an educational resource?

The site is ideal for targeting the "Competence and confidence in using language" aspect of the primary school curriculum. Most activities are drill and practise in type and are suitable as reinforcement learning aids as part of a series of lessons on phonics. Each lesson can follow the same formula, for example.

    • Introduce the concept, eg, blending words
    • Give examples
    • Use activities on the site to consolidate learning
    • Get students to send in their silly sentences after they have familarised themselves with each concept
