Discover cultural treasures from around the world.

What is the site about?

Recently launched, the World Digital Library is an amazing collection of manuscripts (124), maps (306), books (151), journals (37)  recordings (5), films (11), prints/photographs (536), and architectural drawings from around the world.

Broadband and Flash Player  required to view this site.

Why was it chosen as site of the week?

  • It's a valuable repository for primary source material
  • Navigation is excellent. Items are browsed by place, time, topic, type and contributing institution
  • Descriptions are clear and detailed
  • The zoom feature allows closer examination of items
  • Related items appear under each individual item
  • Information is available in multiple languages
  • There's a very informative Help section

How can it be used as an educational resource?

The site is probably best used by teachers and post primary students for general research purposes, although, individual based learning or teacher led demonstrations (using a dataprojector) can be accommodated. It has some relevance to the History, Geography and English subject areas. Consider the following items as curricular support.

The Arrival of Immigrants to Elis Island Video (American History)
Interview with Fountain Hughes Audio (American History)
The Book of Urizen, by William Blake - Book (Senior Cycle English)
A Modern Depiction of Ireland (1598) - Map (Geography & History)

Note: The site may be considered a work in progress and you'll notice there is only one item listed for Ireland.

         Your Comments:

"There are some really interesting manuscripts, videos and books here. Although it may be difficult to find a direct home for them in the curriculum, the site is still worth a look. It is ideal for any study of primary source material and is also suitable for enquiry based learning."
