The Fly Swatter Game - Vocabulary Game

Added: 09 Jun 2017 Contributor: PDST Resource type: Lesson Plan

This activity is suitable for all class levels and can be used to practise a bank of vocabulary words. Record the words for practise in large print in rows across the board. Divide the class into two teams and provide each team with a fly swatter. One pupil from each team comes to the front of the room facing the class, with their back to the board and the fly swatter in their hand. The teacher calls aloud a word from the list on the board and the players have to turn around and touch the word that has been said with the fly swatter. The first one to touch the word gets a point for their team.

Alternatives Rules:

With the same words on the board. Pair the students up differently so that they are competing against a different person from the opposite team. Provide clues to find the word. For example: find something you can sit on. Chair. Find an adjective that could be used to describe weather. Overcast. Provide a definition for the word to be swatted. For example: something that is alone, solitary and without company might be said to be……isolated. Provide a synonym or antonym for the word. Happy….overjoyed…..miserable. Say the word in another language and pupils have to find the English.
