Every young person needs to be literate and numerate. We use the basic skills of literacy and numeracy in almost every part of our lives when we communicate with each other – in traditional written forms or through the internet and digital media – when we follow signs and instructions, when we are at our work or enjoying leisure time, when we try to make sense of the mass of information and data available through the media, and when we are managing our lives. (DES, 2011 p.8)

At post-primary level the targets set out in the Literacy and Numeracy for Learning and Life: The National Strategy to Improve Literacy and Numeracy among Children and Young People 2011- 2020 that seek to improve literacy levels of children nationally extend beyond English class. Instead whole-school literacy programmes are designed and implemented whereby specific literacy is taught across all subject areas to include subject specific vocabulary. This, in effect, recognises and addresses the reading and writing demands of specific subjects.


With a view to supporting teachers in this role, the PDST have developed a two day seminar aimed at Literacy Link teachers. Teachers are equipped with resources and strategies on how to coordinate literacy programmes within their schools and develop whole-school literacy policies.

In addition to this, the JCSP, LCA and LCVP are long established programmes that have been runing various literacy initiatives and interventions with successful outcomes.
