Walpurgis Night

Saturday, 30 April 2022

This is a festival in central and northern Europe and is marked by bonfires and dancing.

In the classroom: Explore the traditions of Walpurgis Night -  and in particular what happens in Sweden.  In Germany the night is called Walpurgisnacht and is said to be a night when witches and sorcerers meet. People make loud noises meant to keep evil away. In the Czech Republic winter is brought to an end by the burning of rag and straw witches. Large bonfires are also popular in Sweden.
