Nelson Mandela International Day

Monday, 18 July 2022

This day marks the birth of the famous South African who inspired the struggle against Apartheid. The United Nations have dedicated this day to his memory and recommend that people spend 67 minutes of time to helping others. The number 67 is significant as it was the number of years that Mandela spent dedicated to public service - as a human rights lawyer, a prisoner of conscience, an international peacemaker and the first democratically elected president of South Africa.

In the classroom: Learn about Nelson Mandela. What was Apartheid? Compare South Africa and Ireland.

Plan what you might do to help people in 67 minutes.
