This was traditionally a big feast day in the Christian church. John the Baptist was a cousin of Jesus and lived as a hermit for many years before telling about the coming of Jesus.

In the classroom: Learn a little more in religion class about John the Baptist. Learn a little more about the Baptist Church - a Protestant christian church that places particular importance on the sacrament, or ritual, of baptism.
