Techniques to Improve Handwriting Ability.

http://blog.maketaketeach.com/strategies-for-improving-handwriting/ Added: 10 May 2016 Contributor: Scoilnet Resource type: Plean Ceachta / Foinse Phríomha

A simple conversation began on twitter whereby a truly caring and compassionate teacher sought for techniques and strategies to help a pupils handwriting ability. Lehinch National School recommended this great find which goes back to basics. Basics are not basics for all children and some need more help at grasping the basics before slipping through the system. With dedicated practice and perseverance, the response to intervention (RtI) techniques which include letter size differentiation, raised line paper, using stickers to ensure spacing between words, direct instruction on case sensitivity, using multi sensory by writing in sand/shaving foam/paint, handwriting without tears app, handwriting practice worksheets and letter rehearsals.

Suggestions for use: As the twitter conversation progressed, a need was highlighted. Practice of handwriting cannot be left up to the English teacher alone. In this case, the English teacher allowed the pupil to sit their exams using an iPad so that assessment was accurately depicting the pupils ability. Secondly, the teacher emailed all the corresponding teachers who work with the pupil to gather ideas and strategies collectively. The form teacher had an essential role as the form teacher checks in with the student daily on a 10 minute basis. Ultimately, for handwriting to improve, everyone in the pupils educational environment needs to sing off the same hymn sheet and become advocates for the pupil to become persistent with the challenge they are facing.

Directly instruct students to be aware of using case sensitives.
Practice writing letters using guided worksheets. Try using different size lined paper or coloured paper. Practice writing letters in a multi-sensory environment to relieve the monotonous factor.
