The War of Independence

A war mounted by the Irish Republican Army (IRA) against the British government and its forces in Ireland. It began in January 1919 and lasted until a ceasefire or "truce" in July 1921.

A fantastic site containing the personal collection of photos and letters of Vinny Byrne. Byrne was a member of Collin’s Squad and had an active role in the Civil War on the Pro Treaty side.. It also contains scans of Poblacht na hEireann and Saorstat, the Anti- and Pro-Treaty newspapers of the time.

Unlike the Easter Rising which was heavily centered in Dublin, the War of Independence was a guerrilla war that was fought throughout the country - the killing of two Royal Irish Constabulary (RIC) members in Co tipperary is said to have been the start of the conflict.
