Suggestions for use: This resource relates to the new Junior Cert Science curriculum.
Starter task: Ask students to state the meaning of classification. - Relate to relationships between objects.
Task 1: Brainstorm on the board using students ideas; what methods we have for representing correlations between objects. (Bar chart, Pie chart, Line ...etc)
In groups, ask students collect data about the students in the class and represent this data on a their chosen charts.
Students should stick their charts on the walls.
Allow time for students to walk around and view other groups ideas.
Task 2: Give each group the set of laminated cards given. (link for cards; need to laminate and cut).
Ask each group to decide on a correlation between the planets and to represent the correlation visually.
Once complete, students stick their posters on the walls around the room. Allow time for class to walk around and review the posters/ take pictures of their work for portfolio.
Plenary: Put the teacher correlation on the board (image ->) and ask students to identify the what is being classified and what is the relationship being represented.

Suggestions for use: Driving question: An optician corrects sight problems, how do they do this?
Set students into groups to explore this question. Brainstorm ideas onto the board. (Some students won't know what an Optician is). Hand students out lenses to look through in exploring this question. Each group feedbacks to the class.
Allow groups to use this website animation to explore the problems further. Hand out a question sheet to each group with higher order questions for pupils to answer...such as What does a concave lens do? What does a convex lens do? When is an image unclear in the human eye? How can you correct short sight? How can you correct long sight?
Provide groups with experimental equipment to test this phenomena in real life. Instruct students to draw a labelled diagram (with functions given) of the eye on A3 paper. Using ray-boxes and lenses, students need to draw the light rays in each case stating whether the image will cause myopia (short sight) or hypermetropia (long sight)
