Suggestions for use: This resource relates to the new Junior Cert Science curriculum.

Starter task: Ask students to state the meaning of classification. - Relate to relationships between objects.
Task 1: Brainstorm on the board using students ideas; what methods we have for representing correlations between objects. (Bar chart, Pie chart, Line ...etc)
In groups, ask students collect data about the students in the class and represent this data on a their chosen charts.
Students should stick their charts on the walls.
Allow time for students to walk around and view other groups ideas.
Task 2: Give each group the set of laminated cards given. (link for cards; need to laminate and cut).
Ask each group to decide on a correlation between the planets and to represent the correlation visually.

Once complete, students stick their posters on the walls around the room. Allow time for class to walk around and review the posters/ take pictures of their work for portfolio.

Plenary: Put the teacher correlation on the board (image ->) and ask students to identify the what is being classified and what is the relationship being represented.

Amazing tool recommended at the Digital MegaMeet. A teacher gasped "Why am I not using this website?". It's easy to use and not overwhelming to maneuver. Excellent for use in preparing for the dreaded Sigma T test. Functions vary from early maths activities right up to algebra and co-ordinate geometry.
Perfect for learning about graphs and drawing graph (with no crooked lines)
Perfect for turning your browser into an interactive whiteboard that can be used to manipulate counters, shapes, dice, spinners, protractors and weights for early maths learners.
It also allows you to introduce a timer, ruler or stopwatch easily and quickly while you work on the board.

Suggestions for use: Excellent for teaching students about graphs. Demonstrate how to draw graph accurately. Put students into groups, challenge students to represent their groups features onto a bar chart using this website.
(Why not introduce an element of competition by beat the clock/stopwatch)
Connect various students displays to the projector board so that the class can provide feedback and check for errors.

Forces and weights:
Click on the balance function to compare and analyse the effect of adding weights to each side.

Eye Defects

http://www.freezeray.com/flashFiles/eyeDefects.htm Added: 24 Jun 2016 Contributor: Scoilnet Resource type: Ionsamhlú

(Adobe Flash Player Required) An interactive website whereby students have an amazing opportunity to become a real life optician. Students are able to explore sight problems such as long sight and short sight. By interchanging the lens, students can self-discovery how to correct sight problems using lenes. Exploring the thickness of convex and concave lenses enables students to adjust where the light rays intersect within the eye. Focus is given to what the image appears as within the eye. Students should make the connection that if the light rays meet at the retina, an clear focused image will be seen. Question students; Why is the image upside down? Do we see everything upside down? What changes the image around?

Suggestions for use: Driving question: An optician corrects sight problems, how do they do this?

Set students into groups to explore this question. Brainstorm ideas onto the board. (Some students won't know what an Optician is). Hand students out lenses to look through in exploring this question. Each group feedbacks to the class.

Allow groups to use this website animation to explore the problems further. Hand out a question sheet to each group with higher order questions for pupils to answer...such as What does a concave lens do? What does a convex lens do? When is an image unclear in the human eye? How can you correct short sight? How can you correct long sight?

Provide groups with experimental equipment to test this phenomena in real life. Instruct students to draw a labelled diagram (with functions given) of the eye on A3 paper. Using ray-boxes and lenses, students need to draw the light rays in each case stating whether the image will cause myopia (short sight) or hypermetropia (long sight)
