The protagonist of the novel is Link, a 16 year old boy who is homeless, frightened and alone on the streets of London. Life on the streets becomes more bearable when Link meets up with other streetwise young people but then he notices that people are disappearing...
The story is narrated in the first person. The author switches from character to character, but still uses the first person narrative. Characters telling the story include Link and an ex-army officer determined to get rid of the 'street people'.
