Monitoring the Weather Online

We all like to know what the weather is going to be like wherever we are. Right?  Meteorology is the branch of science concerned with the processes and phenomena of the atmosphere. Meteorologists study meteorology in order to understand and predict the weather. Weather reporters then broadcast the meteorologists' findings to the public.
Classroom Activity -

Keep an eye on the Met Éireann website  and the RTÉ Weather news for updates on storm Brendan.

Role model the work of a meteorologist and weather reporter using these online digital tools to monitor the weather.

Understanding the Weather Forecast

Accurate weather predictions are important for planning our day-to-day activities. Pilots and aircraft crew members need to know the weather in order to plan which route they should fly and how much fuel they should carry.
Classroom activity - Watch the videos from storm Ophelia and record the impact felt from this storm.

Bad weather can cause a lot of damage. Met Éireann issue special severe weather warnings when they expect bad weather. The warnings are put in place to protect the lives and livelihoods of the nation's citizens, and to migrate damage to property and disturbances to economic activity at times of severe weather.
Classroom activity - Create a weather warning booklet with Scoilnet's Weather Warning presentation.

Measuring the Weather

Weather is measured in weather stations around Ireland and the world. Weather elements such as humidity, temperature, wind speed, wind direction, atmospheric pressure, precipitation and sunlight are measured.
Classroom activity - Use Scoilnet's Measuring Weather presentation to engage students in weather measuring activities.

Met Éireann has a vast array of fun facts, notes and lesson plans to guide teachers and students through activities to measure various weather elements. The resources provide more in-depth information on weather-related topics and introduce more specific skills such as reading weather charts and cloud recognition. Met Éireann resources can be accessed below.

Remembering the Weather

A status red weather alert was issued for the entire country of Ireland in October 2017 for storm Ophelia. Watch videos from the time of the storm to see the overall impact of the storm here.

Another status red snow-ice weather warning was issued by Met Éireann on the 28th Feb - 2nd March 2018. Check out Scoilnet's collection on the Beast from the East to learn about why this weather event happened.
